AlOchanaamR^itaM
AlochanaamR^itaMCharity and altruism are often
essentially egoistic in their immediate motive.
They are stirred by the discomfort of the sight of suffering to the
nervous
system or by the pleasurableness of others' appreciation of our
kindliness or by
the egoistic self-appreciation of our own benevolence or by the need of
indulgence in sympathy. There are philanthropists who would be troubled
if the
poor were not always with us, for they would then have no field for
their
charity...
Nor is detailed sympathy and alleviation of particular sufferings the
only help
that can be given to men. To cut down branches of a man's tree of
suffering is
good, but they grow again; to aid him to remove its roots is still more
divine
helpfulness.
- Sri Aurobindo (January 1915, India's Rebirth pp. 112)
In response to my plea for old concerts, many rasikas generously responded by
mailing cassettes or uploading their collections to me. In this page I provide
all of them online.
One of my cherished goals for putting up this website is to collect and make
available online some of those old (pre-1975) concerts by stalwarts which are so
precious and rare to obtain. They are all locked up in the private music
collections of a few individuals, who are not willing to share them with others
for fear of loss.
That's precisely where the Internet helps, isn't it, to house music in an
indestructible but widely shareable form?
Hence I request rasikas to come forward and share with me copies of those
rare concerts so I can put them online to give everybody an oppurtunity to share
the sangItAmR^itaM ! You'll be duly recognized on the website for your
contribution. And rest assured that it will not be used for profit.
For starters, I am looking for the following:
pre-1970 concerts by M. Balamurali Krishna
pre-1975 concerts by Vinjamuri Varadaraja Iyengar, M.D.Ramanathan, GNB,
Oleti, Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu (violin), or their gurus.
You can send your collection to me in several ways:
You can upload music files to my
upload website in mp3 or
realaudio format, at your convenience.
(The site is password-protected; send me email to get the password).
You are also welcome to send me copies of your cassettes/CDs by postal
mail. Please email me and I'll give you my postal address in the U.S. or India.
I'll put them on my website for everybody's benefit soon after receiving them.
